Press Release

We invite you to Feria Clandestina at the 7 Seas Motel, Miami. The four-day art fair will host artists, galleries, and independent projects from Miami, Amsterdam, Mexico City, and Guadalajara. Guests will be able to enjoy live music recordings through the project Lop-Off Sessions by Houndstooth Cottage (Miami) and buy works from the Buy or Burn by No Es Una Galeria (Mexico City & Amsterdam).

Given the exorbitant costs the art community faces during Art Basel, the historic 7 Seas Motel and Clandestina have partnered to respond by providing discounted room rates and exhibition space within the facilities from December 1 -4, 2022.

Clandestina is an independent art project founded in 2019. Surrounded by local communities worldwide, Clandestina has grown to become a source of access for artists, galleries, and independent proposals. In 2020 Clandestina sponsored the first individual fair exhibition show for Mexican female artists working with technology and kept active during the lockdown with the public art installation “Victory Over the Sun 13” by Monika Bravo through 2020 and 2021. Our partners believe in and align with creating ecosystems to promote curatorial opportunity and cultural dialogue.

The iconic 7 Seas Hotel is one of the oldest motels within historic Biscayne Boulevard in the Miami Modern neighborhood, also known as MiMo. The two-story building was set for Donnie Brasco, Dexter, and No Pain No Gain. The Property is undergoing renovation under the stewardship of Sagar Desai and Activate Hospitality and has become an art ally since 2021 as the host of COLLABO 7.

FAQs

What’s the difference between a Room and the EXHIBITION AREAS?

Motel rooms can be used as an extended exhibition space with the option of the furniture being removed (for small rooms only). Selected participants have the option of curating:

a) Curating a project inside their motel room.

b) Curating a project inside their motel room and one for the EXHIBITION AREAS on the first floor.

c) Use their room as a regular motel occupancy and curate a project just for the EXHIBITION AREAS on the first floor.

Can I participate without paying for a room?

Yes, there’s a fee for Miami Locals in which artists, galleries, and independent projects can participate with a proposal for the EXHIBITION AREAS on the first floor.

There are 3 types of available spaces:

1. Large Room + EXHIBITION AREA: $800 and four nights at the motel.

2. Small Room + EXHIBITION AREA: $650 and four nights at the motel.

3. Miami Local = $250, space for proposals in the EXHIBITION AREAS, no use of rooms included.

What size are the spaces assigned in the EXHIBITION AREAS on the first floor?

The EXHIBITION AREAS are divided into individual spaces of about 9’ H x 5’ L x 5’ D. Depending on your proposal you’ll be assigned wall, table, floor, or window exhibition space. We understand your project might need other space requirements like using sealings or outdoors, we are happy to accommodate as long as you include the details in your proposal.

We are taking over a commercial space inside the motel and the final distribution of the participants will depend on how each proposal works with the environment of the building.

Each participant will have a unique space that will add to the conversation of the fair as a curatorial proposal.

Are there any other fees associated with my participation?

Handyman + Cleaning fees apply. This fee supports the local community and helps generate sources of cash for low-income families. Handyman services include help with the installation of works. You’ll be requested to schedule these services.

Will the fair take any commissions on sales?

No, Feria Clandestina is looking to provide a space for participation that gives artists, galleries, and projects the possibility of building proposals and being part of the dialogue around the fair season. We want to promote a fair economy - art fair approach.
